The novel Sareng Bou (A Seaman’s Wife) tells the tale of the diverse life of a seaman and, in doing so, describes the diversity of so many cities and ports crisscrossed along the lines of longitude and latitude. But at the centre is the story of the struggle of Sareng Bou, the seaman’s wife Nabitun, who stands up against the lechery of the village clique, against the financial constraints they create, against the unfounded suspicions in her husband’s mind. Nabitun is not just another virtuous woman of the Bangla novel, she is woman who fights fiercely for her existence and honour. She may be as soft as the silt of the sea, but holds her head high in proud determination.
