This book brings together in a comparative framework the contributions of the four legendary professors - Nurul Islam, Mosharaff Hossain, Md. Anisur Rahman, and Rehman Sobhan - to the struggle for autonomy and independence and nation building in early years of Bangladesh. It makes a special effort to explain the context in which the professors played their role. It shows that, despite the commonality of their views, the professors differed in many concrete respects. The identification of these differences helps to have a deeper understanding of the complex issues that Bangladesh faced, particularly in its early years. The four professors’ readiness to accept material sacrifice and physical risks for the sake of the country can serve as a source of inspiration for new generations of Bangladesh’s intellectuals.

নজরুল ইসলাম বাংলাদেশের বিশিষ্ট অর্থনীতিবিদ ও পরিবেশবিদ। মস্কো রাষ্ট্রীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে স্নাতকোত্তর এবং হার্ভার্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে পিএইচডি ডিগ্রি অর্জন করেন। ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের হার্ভার্ড, এমোরি ও সেন্ট জোন্স বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় এবং জাপানের কিয়ুশু বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অর্থনীতি বিভাগে শিক্ষকতা করেছেন। অর্থনীতির বিভিন্ন শাখায় মৌলিক গবেষণার মাধ্যমে তিনি আন্তর্জাতিক খ্যাতি অর্জন করেছেন। বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতি, রাজনীতি ও পরিবেশ নিয়েও তিনি দীর্ঘকাল ধরে গবেষণা করছেন। এসব বিষয়ে তাঁর প্রকাশিত গ্রন্েথর মধ্যে রয়েছে জাসদের রাজনীতি (১৯৮১), বাংলাদেশের উন্নয়ন কৌশল প্রসঙ্গ (১৯৮৪), বাংলাদেশের উন্নয়ন সমস্যা (১৯৮৭), আগামী দিনের বাংলাদেশ (২০১২), বাংলাদেশের পানি উন্নয়ন (২০২৩) এবং আগামী বাংলাদেশের দশ করণীয় (২০২৪)। তিনি বাংলাদেশ পরিবেশ নেটওয়ার্ক (বেন)-এর প্রতিষ্ঠাতা এবং বাংলাদেশ পরিবেশ আন্দোলন (বাপা) গঠনের উদ্যোক্তা ও সহসভাপতি।
